“Creating livelihood is one thing, but sustaining it is another”–a gist from the Regional Director of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Region X (MGBX), Felizardo A. Gacad, Jr.’s meaningful message for the Lugait Bamboo Craft Association (LBCA) members during the Induction of Officers and Turn-over Ceremony of Kamot-Kawayan LBCA Bamboo Hub on July 14, 2022 in Lower Talacogon, Lugait, Misamis Oriental.

He followed it with a challenge to all the LBCA members to work hand in hand in making this livelihood work as he sees great potential in its products. He emphasized the power of cooperation in achieving their goal, which goes to both HRDC and the LGU of Lugait as well—that teamwork is the key in everything. He added that walking together on a greener path is always better than walking alone. Thus, RD Gacad left a message of determination and resiliency as he means not to sugar-coat the responsibility of sustaining livelihood opportunities.

The LBCA is a joint livelihood project of Barangays Lower Talacogon, and Población in Lugait, Misamis Oriental, funded under the Social Development and Management Program (SDMP) of Helix Resources and Development Corporation (HRDC). They create bamboo cutleries, lamps, trays, and are yet to venture on bamboo furniture and hand-made nito bags and pouches.

A recent event of MGBX last May 05, 2022 debuted the marketing of LBCA’s products among its guests and participants. Their items were sold out and were appreciated by potential investors. Another opportunity was during the Fair Trade of DENR 10 on June 13-17, 2022 where DENR10 employees bought majority of their products.

To close the turn-over ceremony, Mr. Marjon B. Anhao, President of LBCA gave his utmost gratitude to MGBX, HRDC, and the LGU of Lugait for the never-ending support. With the turn-over of the Kamot-Kawayan LBCA Bamboo Hub, they are now given a proper place to work on their products efficiently. Mr. Anhao hopes for the success of the Kamot-kawayan Livelihood and to expand in the future with its own treatment pond and machines.
