Task Force Kinaiyahan on Sunday, July 19, 2015, called on all concerned parties for the urgent rehabilitation of abandoned mine sites. The Task Force, headed by Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Regional Director Rex S. Monsanto, Chairman Orlando Ravanera of the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA), CLENRO Edwin Dael, Romeo Tidadul of MGB-10 and task Force Coordinator, and the military, police and media, visited an abandoned mine site in Brgy. Tingalan, Opol, Misamis Oriental.
Chairman Ravanera called on all concerned parties, especially the companies that profited in the past from these mine sites, to pay for the degradation that they have caused to the environment in these areas. Regional Director Monsanto said that the area needs immediate rehabilitation, and observed from the present state of vegetation that the area could still be rehabilitated. MGB-10 OIC Geosciences Division Osin Sinsuat, Jr. clarified that soil liquefaction was not a probable cause of potential hazard in the area, noting that this phenomenon often occurs during earthquakes and in a different situation, but observed the denuded condition of the area and surroundings as aggravating factor in case of a landslide especially in times of intense or prolonged rainfall.
The Anti-Illegal Mining and Logging Task Force called on local governments to be vigilant in case of natural disasters, through their local disaster risk reduction and management councils, especially with the challenge of climate change.
