The recently concluded Joint Consultative Meeting on Mining Concerns in Northern Mindanao and Zamboanga Peninsula held at the Chali Resort and Conference   Center last May 5, 2022 ended with a sound success. It was a joint effort of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau IX and X that aims to define the principal issues of the mining priority projects categorized under phase I and ll and its interventions in Northern Mindanao and Zamboanga Peninsula.

It is also the objective of this activity to design a Mineral Industry Road Map geared towards revitalizing the industry by expanding production and contribution to the economy, employment and for the mining sector to be globally competitive.

The meeting was attended by more or less 200 identified Mining Companies and Permit Holders operating in Northern Mindanao and Zamboanga Peninsula.  Acted as panelists during the Consultative Meeting  include MGB Region IX Director Hernani Abdon and Region X Director Felizardo A. Gacad, Jr.,  MGB Manila  Chief of the Mining Tenement and Management Division , Engr. Danilo Deleña,  Chief the of the Mine Safety  Environment and Social Development Division Engr. Marcial Mateo,   DENR Regional Executive Directors of Region IX and X, Director of the    National Commission on Indigenous Peoples Region lX  and,  from both Regions   representatives from the Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Agriculture and from the National Irrigation Administration.

Attending high ranking officials from the DENR were Atty. Ernesto D. adobo, Jr.  Undersecretary for  Legal , Administration,  Human Resources and Legislative and Mining   Affairs who was the Keynote speaker,   Assistant Secretary for Field Operations -Western Mindanao Arleigh J. adorable, MGB Director Atty. Wilfredo G. Moncano and EMB Director William Cuñado.

Prior to the start of the activity, there  was the ribbon cutting for the exhibits on local products like Romblon bags, bamboo crafts and Eco bricks produced by Mining communities under the Social Development and Management Program (SDMP).

Highlights of the Consultative Meeting was the presentation on the status of the identified priority projects such as:

For Northern Mindanao:

  • Status of Earth Tools and Development –Priority Project Phase 1
  • Status of Holcim Resources and Development Corp. –Priority Project Phase 2
  • Status of CEKAS Development Corp. – Priority Project Phase 2

For Zamboanga Peninsula:

  • Status of TVIRDP, Balabag Gold & Silver Project  and Canatuan Project
  • Status of Sand and Gravel Operation in Zamboanga Peninsula

Issues raised during the presentations particularly matters affecting    NCIP, DPWH, DENR, EMB and MGB concerns were addressed by the panelists concerned.

Synthesis of the entire proceedings manifested a sound success for the activity as it met the objective of assessing the status of the mining priority projects and the development of a framework or action plan to resolve mining issues/concerns and the responsible agencies.
