The DENR-Mines and Geosciences Bureau, Lands Geological Survey Division, headed by OIC-Chief, Mr. Antonio Apostol, organized the 2019 Geoscience Workshop on February 18 to 22. DENR-MGB, Region III hosted this year’s workshop in Clark, Pampanga.
The first day included a presentation on Geopark by Ms. Liza Socorro Manzano, Supervising Science Research Specialist, MGB-Central Office, and on Laboratory Matters by Ms. Jocelyn Villanueva, Senior Science Research Specialist, MGB-Central Office. The second day opened with a talk on Geodatabase by Ms. Carleen Joy Gatdula, Senior Science Research Specialist, MGB-Central Office. After this, breakout sessions were held for the next two days of the workshop and facilitated by the following: Geologic Quadrangle Mapping Workshop by Dr. Maybellin Zepeda, Supervising Geologist, MGB-Central Office; Groundwater Resource Assessment by Mr. Aniano Torres, Supervising Science Research Specialist, MGB-Central Office; Updating 1:10,000 scale Geohazard Maps, on Vulnerability and Risk Assessment, and on Information, Education and Communication by Mr. Salvio Laserna, Supervising Science Research Specialist, MGB-Central Office; Mineral Reservation Program by Mr. Raymundo Villones, Supervising Science Research Specialist, MGB-Central Office; PDRA by Mr. Carl Reiner Padua, Geologist, MGB-Central Office; and Subsidence Hazard Assessment by Ms. Manzano.
Ms. Eloisa Legaspi, Chief, Finance Management Division, MGB-Central Office, and Ms. Socorro Oquendo, OIC-Chief, Planning, Policy and International Affairs Division, MGB-Central Office, attended the workshop.
Highlight of the workshop was the expedition to Mt. Pinatubo. It is an active vocano in the Zambales Mountains, located on the tripoint boundary of the provinces of Zambales, Tarlac, and Pampanga in Central Luzon. Its eruption on June 15, 1991 was the second largest eruption of the 20th century.
