“Kulturang Pinoy… Kulturang MGB 119 Taon Kapit-bisig Tungo sa Responsableng Pagmimina” banners this year’s founding anniversary of the Bureau.
Dating back during the Spanish regime, the Bureau was then known as the Inspeccion General de Minas, in-charge of the administration and disposition of minerals and mineral lands in the country. Since then, it has gone thru various reorganization with name changes from Departamento de Fomento or Department of Public Welfare under the Philippine Revolutionary Republic to Bureau of Mines during the Philippine Commonwealth and then again renamed as Bureau of Mines and Geosciences further making it more responsive to its varied functions. Finally, the passage of Republic Act 7942, otherwise known as the Philippine Mining Act of 1995 on March 3, 1995, and DAO No. 96-40, the Implementing Rules and Regulations of RA 7942, transformed the office into a line bureau and was then named as the Mines and Geosciences Bureau. In 1997, by virtue of DAO 97-11, the MGB implemented a full reorganization specifically involving the establishment of two new divisions—the Mining Environment and Safety Division, and the Mine Tenement Management Division—thus, essentially operationalizing the sustainable development principles provision of the Mining Act of 1995.
Highlights of the 119th anniversary celebration last 29 November 2017 was a Thanksgiving Mass officiated by Msgr. Rey Manuel S. Monsanto, SSJV, JCD . In his homily, he challenged all employees to continue safeguard the environment, not to cower under all forms of threats and uphold above all else the integrity in serving the people.
Part II of the celebration was the recognition of service awardees highlighting their valuable contribution to the attainment of the thrusts and programs of the office thru their dedicated service. Mr. Jerome N. Ventic, Chief Administrative Officer lead the most number of years having have served the people for forty (40) years already. This was then followed by a re-orientation on ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management System) in preparation to the upcoming second stage of the third-party audit.
In his closing message, RD Rex S. Monsanto commended the management and staff for rallying on despite the many demands of public service, that despite being faced with the visit of the validating team, the voluminous documentation requirements for ISO audit, the office was able to pull through and celebrate another year of the Bureau.
MGB’s 119 years of existence has only proven its unwavering commitment in championing sustainability in mining and geosciences, and will continue onwards.
