The DENR-Mines and Geosciences Bureau went on an IEC blitz on Geologic Hazards and Disaster Risk Reduction on March 16 to 18, 2016.
On March 16, the team of Regional Director Rex Monsanto conducted IEC on Geologic Hazards and Disaster Awareness and Preparedness (Disaster Risk Reduction) during the 5th Provincial Barangay Congress of Lanao del Norte held at the Mindanao Civic Center in the provincial capital of Tubod, which had for its theme, “Sapat na Kaalaman para sa Kaligtasan ng Mamamayan”. Particular reminder was made by Chief Geologist Osin Sinsuat, Jr. to the barangay officials of the Municipality of Sultan Naga Dimaporo to take safety precaution in the event of a tsunami and to the barangay officials of the Municipality of Kapatagan to take safety precaution in case of an earthquake. The reminders are based on PHIVOLCS data and historical experience. In his speech, Lanao del Norte Governor, Hon. Mohamad Khalid Dimaporo, took pride in his province being disaster-prepared. The province is a recipient of the Gawad Kalasag from the RDRRMC-10 and has been a national finalist.
On March 18, MGB-10 conducted IEC on Geologic Hazards and Disaster Awareness and Preparedness (Disaster Risk Reduction) to the barangay officials of Cagayan de Oro City at the Dynasty Court Hotel. Citing information from the archives of the Manila Observatory, Mr. Sinsuat informed the body that on the contrary, “Mindanao was never typhoon-free”.
On March 17, also at the Dynasty Court Hotel, MGB-10 Chief Geologist Sinsuat was resource speaker during the “Advocacy and Information Campaign on Mainstreaming Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction (CCA-DRR) in Local Development Planning” organized by the Department of the Interior and Local Government-10. Sinsuat spoke on Hazard Information and Utilization in Local Development Planning – Flood, Landslide and other Geologic Hazards. Sinsuat shared environmental laws which date back to the 1970s.
