On April 16, 2019, representatives of MGB Regional Office No. X participated on the Benchmarking activity of Holcim Resources Development Corporation (HRDC) to compare the company’s processes and performance to Carmen Copper Corporation’s best practices in Toledo City, Cebu. The said activity was participated by respective personnel from Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Region 10, Mines and Geosciences Bureau-Region X, Environmental Management Bureau- Region X and Local Government Units of Lugait, Misamis Oriental and Iligan City. Various efforts of CCC were visited to gain insights and appreciate the company’s initiatives on environmental protection and enhancement, social development and management, MRFC and MMT operations, and reforestation of mined-out areas being employed to foster responsible mining.
A brief presentation on the company’s background, history, awards and contribution throughout the approximately 65 years of mining operation was presented. Lt. Gen. Roy Deveraturda, President and Chief Executive Officer of CCC signified the importance of cooperation between mining industries in conducting activities upholding environmental protection and social development. Queries from the participants were addressed by Mr. Ignacio B. Alburo, Assistant Vice President and CCC Focal Person on Safety, Health, Environment, Community (SHEC) and External Affairs. The team visited various areas of the mining facility during the activity as follows: Carmen Pit; Biga Pit (Tailings Storage Facility); Nursery and CCC Ecological Park.
The team was also led to a tour at the Carmen Copper Heritage Center, the first copper mining museum in Southeast Asia which exhibits the CCC’s long history. Memorabilia were displayed to provide a walk-through on the process of extracting copper ore from the earth as it undergoes as a raw material in the production of useful items being used at present. The museum also highlights the company’s responsible mining and its contribution to the community’s development since 1953.
