The Geological Convention (GEOCON) is an annual event conducted by the Geological Society of the Philippines (GSP) which aims to bring together geologists and other professionals with relation to the field for the purpose of sharing knowledge and ideas. This year’s theme is 75 Years of Geosciences in the Philippines: Opportunities, Advances and Frontiers.
Through the Zoom Cloud Meetings web-based video conferencing tool, geologists from this office participated in the three-day convention held by the Geological Society of the Philippines (GSP), which ran through December 1 to 3, 2020.
GSP invited numerous speakers from various sectors, all of whom presented research studies related to geology. Aside from the plenary sessions, the conference was divided into three parallel, synchronous sessions with varying topics. Participants could choose which session to join at any given time. The GeoCon was also an opportunity for members of the GSP to vote for the association’s board of trustees and hear about other important matters regarding the association.
The first day began with welcome remarks from GSP President Carla Dimalanta, who also proceeded to act as moderator for the first plenary session. Among the presentations on the first day was the talk on the seismo-tectonic complexity in the Philippine island arc given by Mr. Emmanuel Ramos of Tekton Geometrix, Inc. His study covered more than 50 years of earthquake source mechanics in the country.
Other notable presentations throughout the convention are: The October – December 2019 Mindanao earthquakes: Seismotectonics and associated stress changes by John Agustin Escudero of the National Institute of Geological Sciences – University of the Philippines, Diliman (UP-NIGS); Karst environments in the Philippines: Their development, management, and protection by Marie Krystel Hugo of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau – Central Office; Taal 2020 ground fissures: Indications of rift volcanism? by Dwayne Joshua Rafael of UP-NIGS; and Modelling earthquake-volcano interaction after the Taal Volcano January 2020 Eruptions by Raul Benjamin Mendoza of UP-NIGS.
The convention concluded with the announcement for the new board of trustees. Dr. Dimalanta was, again, voted as President of GSP for C.Y. 2021.
