The Mines and Geosciences Bureau Regional Office X spearheads the conduct of Information Education and Communication Campaign on the aspect of Mining Permitting System in the province of Camiguin.

Considering Camiguin as the Region’s frontline tourist destination, it is imperative for proper management, development and utilization of minerals   to ensure no adverse impact, especially on declared tourism areas. This is in consonance with the   Department of Environment and Natural Resources thrust for a sustainable utilization of the country’s mineral resources under a responsive policy framework in partnership with the Local Government Units and other stakeholders.

As an initial mechanism to address this concern, an information dissemination was conducted last June 15, 2022 on the Mining Permitting System to the Provincial Government of Camiguin (PG Camiguin) specifically to the personnel of the Provincial Agriculture’s Office (PAO) being the designated Office assigned to handle mining concerns.

Participants in   the IEC activity were headed by the Provincial Agriculture Officer Engr. Maharlika Cagadas and the designated Natural Resources Officer Mr. Rey Jurial, identified personnel from the Provincial Treasurers Office, Provincial Legal Officer and members of the Association of small-scale miners.

The primary objective of this Activity is anchored on the  harmonization of the existing Policy of PG Camiguin in  the issuance of mining permit and the Prescribed Policy provided under DENR Administrative Order (DAO)2010-21 which is the Implementing Rules and Regulations of RA 7942 or the Philippine Mining Act of 1995.

Highlights of the IEC activity were the discussion regarding the creation and installation of Environment and NaturaL Resources Offices (ENRO) in Camiguin, streamlining of the mandatory requirements for mining permits, schedule of the proposed benchmarking activity of PG Camiguin to other ENRO offices in the Region with the best mining permitting, and monitoring processes.

Ways forward were also considered to materialize   and harmonize the mining permitting system in Camiguin in accordance with DAO 2010-21, the IRR of RA 7942.

Result of the River Assessment/Survey on areas identified as potential for quarry operations conducted by MGB X technical personnel last March 28, 2022 to April 2, 2022 was also presented. The result of the river assessment will be used for consideration by the LGU Camiguin, Department of Tourism, and other concerned government agencies.
